During normal operation in 1st Gear, the low roller clutch locks the reaction carrier to the center support. If the clutch fails to hold the reaction carrier, the direct drum can be driven to speeds exceeding 15,000 rpm, damaging the clutches or even causing the drum to explode. OE-style low roller clutches used in high-torque and performance applications are especially vulnerable, as the rollers can pop out with enough force to crush or flatten the accordion springs. When this happens, the springs lose tension and can no longer keep the rollers energized against the outer race ramps, rendering the clutch ineffective.
The Sonnax heavy duty low roller clutch assembly features physical stops that limit roller travel when pop-out occurs, protecting the springs from damage. This allows the springs to maintain their form so the clutch continues to hold under even the most extreme conditions.
